Hosting | A Small Gathering

This weekend felt like the perfect excuse to have a few over for an outdoor brunch. I thought I’d share a few hosting on a budget tips and share a few sunny moments with you from our little spot in the world. Enjoy! xx-l

So, I had 9 adult guests + Justin and me and 5 kiddos to feed. I went the route of Savory Brunch. My MIL brought some ham and Rhodes Cinnamon Rolls. These cinnamon rolls are SUCH a good trick, if you don’t want to make rolls from scratch but want them to taste as though you’ve been laboring for days. Yum. The rest of the menu included sourdough English muffins (click here for recipe) with eggs (farm fresh) and sausage. I bought 2lbs of bulk spicy pork sausage from Whole Foods (about $9) and 1 lb of milk pork sausage (4ish$) and added a slice of cheese in there. They were soooo yummy. I’d practice run the English muffins once before you host a gathering. Also, you can make them prior to guests arriving and reheat in the toaster, or on a griddle. The smarter route, for sure than cooking them while guests are arriving. I also had a side dish of berries, homemade salsa (click here for recipe), and a salad! Fresh, simple, delicious. Mimosas, coffee and lemon water to drink.

I sorted through cabinets and pulled some old school Karen decor from the back which felt kind of comforting and simple. The most costly part of the experience was the flowers and the champagne and they’re both worth a small splurge. I always check my local Trader Joes or Whole Foods to see what they have. Snap Dragons and Ranunculus are always a favorite and the winners for this brunch. Remember, florals don’t have to be perfectly placed. They’re perfect when they’re kind of messy and just so pretty. I peeled all of the green leaves off of their stems after they’d rested in water for 1 day and then assorted them into former candle ceramics, small metal tins, and glasses. Groupings of vases in odd numbers is my go-to move.

I grabbed flour sack cloths from Target, $4 for 4. I love these as towels, used them as place mats. The dishes were my gran’s. I adore them for sweet occasions. I used Justin’s grandma’s silver and pulled out a few little knick-knacks that are often only kept safe. Holiday’s like Easter feel just right for these moments, after all most of my favorite holidays were eaten on these dishes anyway. We pulled the kitchen table outside, as well as the chairs. Sometimes it’s just about changing perspective.

Shopping home first, is always key to not spending a lot. Making do with what you have is always fun- challenges our creativity and being content more with the guests and conversation is the ultimate goal.

To hosting, however, it may be.
